Municipal Sludge Treatment

Sludge is the residual, semi-solid material that is produced as a by-product during wastewater treatment. It is usually very inconsistent in composition and most often unmanageable. Contaminants removed from the wastewater treatment process are concentrated in the sludge, which pose serious problem to the health and environment if it is not properly managed. With proper treatment and management, sludge could be recycled into valuable and renewable resource.

As of 2020, there were more than 4,000 sewage treatment plants in China, with a total treatment capacity of more than 200 million tons/day. In 2020, these sewage treatment plants produced more than 60 million tons of sludge per annum. China currently has more than 6,600 industrial parks and generates an estimate of 60 million tons of sludge.*

Currently only a fraction of the sludge are treated by incineration, resource recovery and various volume reduction techniques etc. Majority of sludge are inadequately treated and are landfilled. This posts serious threat of contamination to the environment. There exists huge market potential for municipal sludge management to attain mass reduction, stabilization, sterilization, energy and resource recovery, and low carbon emission.

Leader’s municipal sludge treatment technology is customized to suit the characteristics of municipal sludge based on a deep understanding of the upstream wastewater treatment processes and the various sludge treatment technologies adopted in different parts of world. We have developed a unique solution based on a combination of sludge pre-treatment, continuous thermal hydrolysis, pyrolysis (or incineration) and integrated energy recovery technology. Dewatering sludge can achieve high mass reduction of sludge. However conventional methods such as mechanical dewatering, heat drying methods are costly and the water removal efficiency is not high.

Continuous and Closed-Loop Sludge Treatment Technology

Leader’s Continuous and Closed-Loop Sludge Treatment Technology is a cost-effective, low carbon footprint and resource recovery technology. The sludge after CTH and filter press has only 35% water content and achieve up to 70% mass reduction. Carbon emission is reduced by more than 40% as compared to conventional heat drying process.

- Adsorbent for heavy metals and glyphosate from the soil

- Building material to produce non-sintered brick
